Barbara Oakley
About the instructor
A linguist and former U.S. Army Signal Officer with a degree in Slavic Languages and Literature, Electrical Engineering, and Systems Engineering, has been married for 33 years and has two daughters and two adopted sons. After working as a Russian translator on Soviet trawlers in the Bering Sea and as a radio operator at the South Pole Station in Antarctica, worked as an instrumentation and controls engineer at a laser research and development firm near Seattle. Moved to the Detroit area in 1989 and worked for Ford briefly, then began consulting and attending Oakland University part time while raising children. Received a M.S. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1995 and a Ph.D. in Systems Engineering in 1998. Currently a professor at Oakland University and has published research on the complex relationship between neuroscience and social behavior in outlets such as the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times.
